Abstraction, 1960, oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in (61 x 50.8 cm), signed lower left and signed additionally verso, PROVENANCE: Private collector Boston, MA , ARTIST INFORMATION: Born in Hamamatsu, Japan, on September 20, 1900, Issei artist Byron Takashi Tsuzuki (1900-67) is best known for his work created in the World War II camps that incarcerated Japanese Americans. He immigrated directly to New York at the age of sixteen in 1917, where he joined the Art Students League and studied with Yasuo Kuniyoshi , while also studying art at Columbia University throughout the 1920s. Tsuzuki participated in the annual exhibitions of the Society of Independent Artists, the Salons of America, and Anderson Galleries, all of New York, along with fellow Japanese artists such as Noboru Foujioka, Eitaro Ishigaki, Torajiro Watanabe, and Yoshida Sekido. He eventually became the co-director of the Salons of America with Kuniyoshi. In 1932, he moved to California with his wife and daughter to become a caretaker of an estate in San Mateo. After the signing of Executive Order 9066 that authorized the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans living on the West Coast, he and his family were incarcerated at Tanforan Assembly Center and then at Topaz in Utah, where he taught at the camp art school with Chiura Obata and George Matsusaburo Hibi . In camp, he created a series of paintings that depict daily life in camp and people engaged in everyday activities such as doing laundry and playing shogi , all against the backdrop of the harsh desert prison. After the war, he returned to New York where he worked as a dental technician and continued to paint until his death at the age of sixty-six.He died in September 1967 in New York City, New York.

Landscape Paesaggio, circa 1920's, oil on board, 10 x 8 1/4 in (25.4 x 21 cm), signed lower right, PROVENANCE: From a private collector Pennsylvania, ART NOTATION: In paintings of 1931, pushing his objects to the point of abstraction, but never beyond, Morandi thoroughly shook off traces of nineteenth-century nostalgia. This is a reaction to the increasingly hopeless political situation, as "the most desperate freedom" of an Italian artist around 1930. In paintings as late as 1936 Morandi continued this obliteration of the clarity of form. It would not be wrong to call these abstractions, for only the merest sensation of landscape remains as Morandi. He created paintings that are little else than basic architectural structures, purely formal compositions with nothing specifically Italian about them.

His work is characterized by bold use of color in a style reminiscent of the Fauve painters. It was his participation in the “Exhibition of Five” in Yerevan in 1962 that exposed his work to a wider audience. A museum dedicated to Avetisyan’s work was established in his hometown of Djadjur, but was later leveled in an earthquake.

Abstract Composition, goauche, 7 1/2 x 10 3/4 in (19.05 x 27.31 cm), signed lower right, dated 1944, PROVENANCE: Property of a private collector Pennsylvania, ARTIST NOTATION: James Meilke Guy is considered by many a "Social Surrealist" with a painting style influenced by Salvador Dali and Fernand Legere. Throughout his life he had been politically involved in a number of organizations. During World War II, he worked in an aircraft factory and it was suggested that he was highly influenced by the abstract shapes which he incorporated into his art work and thru this experience his style changed from social surrealism to a more abstractionist approach to art incorporating abstract forms and the human figure. Guy was born in Connecticut and for a period of time taught at Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT as well as the Hartford College for Women and the Bennington College of Vermont. He died in 1983 in Moodus, CT. This artist achieved a record auction price over $45000 in 2017. SEE IMAGE 5.
